What’s the Deal with Vegan Reader?

Vegan Reader is authored by a husband and wife who believe that the true power of compassionate living goes way beyond what you eat.

Mim and Ham are in their 30’s. Mim has been a vegan since she was a kid and Ham went vegan when he married Mim.

We are publishing Vegan Reader to provide reading materials that are geared toward people walking the vegan path. We want you to have a media source that respects your sensibilities. In this world, vegans get used to weeding through so much material that simply doesn’t pertain to them. Vegan Reader offers you the opposite experience - for once, you are the mainstream audience we are hoping to engage.

Three Things We’re Thinking About Right Now

1) We don’t like the rising trend we’ve witnessed over the past decade of large American corporations starting to target vegans. A walk down the aisles of your neighborhood Whole Foods is all you need to see just how much junk manufacturers are attempting to market to vegans under the dubious ‘natural’ label. These skilled, glossy campaigns for your dollar have the potential to turn you away from the low-impact, simple whole foods eating that is the best for you and the planet. We plan to devote a lot of time to talking about this topic on Vegan Reader.

2) We are unstinting in our condemnation of America’s worst enemies: Monsanto, agribusiness, and mainstream media. The power of these three sources to destroy the planet’s food, destroy the family farm, and lull you into passive acceptance cannot be underestimated. The Hard Truths section of Vegan Reader aims to provide home truths about destructive institutions and consumer behavior that must be mindfully opposed.

3) We are feeling hopeful about the green movement. If the popularization of planet-friendly thinking leads to Americans learning to reduce and share, it may be the most important thing that has happened on Earth in recent history. Some people will lead and others will follow, and if the end result is the protection of our world and the survival of its plant and animal species (including humans), we support the green movement 100%. Vegans know that it’s going to come down to a choice for any person who truly wants to withdraw from the habits and systems that cause harm.

That choice is going to be to go vegan.

Simple dietary changes have a massive effect on the world, as vegans know. And then, there is the whole life change of coming to view the world with compassion. It gives you a startling new vision of your place in the scheme of things and does a major overhaul on your concepts of equality. We hope Vegan Reader will help anyone with green leanings to feel empowered to take some wise next steps.

Thanks for an excellent site! Depressing info, but incredibly informative. I’m doing a radio show tomorrow about the spraying and stumbled upon your site while doing research. I’m also vegan, so I’m glad I found you.
The show airs tomorrow from 11 am - noon on KALW 91.7 FM.

Excellent articles. Please let people know that Joanie Greggains will be devoting two hours of her KGO health & fitness radio show on Saturday, 4/5, 8-10 AM to talk about the issue of spraying. The CDFA will be trying to defend their views and have welcomed people to call in. Joanie will continue to fight this fight. The show is also streamed at http://www.kgoam810.com and archived there, so it can be downloaded as an MP3 file to listen later, forward, or post on your own website.

    Thank you!
