You know what? I have some sewing skills, can knit, crochet and make jewelry. My husband actually makes his own clothes, pants, shirts and hats. I have thought of making my own clothes, but have been fearful (of what, who knows). Thank you SO much for this inspiring and well thought out post. I saw this (making my own clothes) as a daunting task, and now it doesn't seem so bad. I wanted to buy all these books on making your own clothes; however I'm just going to go through your link on making a Mexican style dress for myself as I need it for my house. The thought which really hit home, is that we are not helpless. And yes we need to also take some direction from our Ancestors which knew how to sew, embroider, knit, crochet, cook, keep a great house, and also make a fire, and do a million other things. I will just take this one step at a time. Thanks again. :)

Greetings, Sewwhat!
That is terrific that you are homeschooling and teaching children to sew. Passing on your skills to them is a work of great value that they will be benefiting from all their lives.

I love quilting, too, and my husband and I have sewn all our own quilts together. They are both warm and so beautiful.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! Keep up the great work!

We're a homeschooling family as well and I teach young girls how to sew. They're eager to try their hand at fashion design. I remember sewing an entire weekend just so I could wear a new dress to school on Monday. My mother taught me to sew when I was 8 years old. I love it. My ironing board is never put away. The iron is only one plug away from being hot and I've always got a project in process. My new love is quilting. Can you ever have too many blankies?

Welcome to VeganReader, Shana!

So glad you liked the homeschooling comment. I really am a fan of homeschooling and applaud you in your choice of being your children's #1 teacher. That's truly great.

The Asian pattern books you mention sound really interesting. I haven't seen one of these, but I'm fascinated to hear that the instructions are so simple that even an English speaker can understand them. That's quite a recommendation! It's so nice that you sew for your daughter. My mother sewed for my sisters and myself when I was little and it is she who inspires me with a real love of sewing. She still sews beautiful clothing for herself and is teaching the grandkids, now! I hope you can pass on your skills to your daughter.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and keep up the great work with your family!

At this point, I mostly sew for my daughter, but I recently found a pattern book to make some nice clothing for my sons as well. I have been enthralled with the Japanese pattern books. Even though they are in Japanese, the instructions and patterns are so much simpler than the American Big 3 pattern companies that I find myself turning to them more and more.

I also have to say that I absolutely LOVE this comment:
"If you have children who threaten to die if they aren’t given designer clothing…homeschool them to get rid of such useless, materialistic notions that put the focus on belongings instead of the value of the human person."

I already homeschool my kids, but I just thought this was a great line :)

Greetings, Caren,
Your heart-felt statements are expressed with exceeding eloquence and I couldn't agree more. That would be a real revolution!

If we teach skills to our children we are restarting the process of self sufficiency that has been lost. This re-generation might result in a future society of much more human humans, who think for themselves and care about the quality of life on earth rather than the quantity of things to be accumulated. That would be a real revolution.

Thank you for sharing this info and insight. I too should spend more of my time sharing but feel as if I am adrift in a sea of things I need to learn and do in my life and can't possibly do them all. What astounds me the most is how I lived the first twenty something years of my life with my eyes closed to the way this American society has robbed me and my family of knowledge, independence and personal power. I believe that this country was founded on correct principles but too soon after greed began to worm it's way in to every aspect of our society. Today in many ways corporations have more power and authority than government. Anyway, I too am on a quest to regain knowledge that was lost more than three generations ago in my family. My mother is still living and she too shares my passion and vision, as well as my two brothers and their families. Thank you for putting your knowledge and experience out for everyone to see.
