Dr. Larry Rose, M.D., MPH is a former Senior Public Medical Officer for Cal-OSHA and part of the UCSF Occupational/Environmental Medicine Department. He has published this incredibly important report to inform California physicians and the public about the dire toxicity of the ingredients in LBAM Spray.
From the report:
Checkmate Toxicology
Immediate short term acute health concerns are to be expected from the known toxicology of several of the chemicals in the Checkmate formulation mix and in the polyurea plastic particulate capsule.Over 643 recorded health complaints were associated with the September, October, and November spraying in Monterey and Santa Clara Counties. These short term complaint symptoms are consistent with known toxicology scientific information of the ingredients of Checkmate (see attached document). These ingredients include irritants, sensitizers, nervous system disrupters, endocrine disruption, allergens, and hypersensitivity induction.
Long term health effects are also of concern due to the known induced mutations and suspected cancer risks of constituent chemicals.

This report needs to be in the hands of every California medical practitioner within the huge spray zone and a copy needs to be hand-delivered to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. CDFA needs to stop calling this witch’s brew of carcinogenic chemicals safe if they don’t want to end up in prison and, if our governor wants to stay in office, he needs to call this chemical assault on the people of California off!
Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Larry Rose, M.D, MPH, for doing his duty in reporting on the true public health danger he has recognized in the aerial spraying of pesticides and toxic chemicals on the people of California.

Update:
I also want to include in this post a link to the toxicology study conducted by Richard B. Philp, DVM, PhD, Emertius Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Western Ontario.
If you have yet to read Dr. Philp’s analysis of the grave toxicity of the LBAM spray, here it is.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI was exposed to the LBAM spray in 2007 here in Santa Cruz. Since then I’ve been struggling with shortness of breath and high blood pressure. No help from acupuncture or western medicine. Lungs are fine, heart is fine, no blocked coronary artery.
Alternative healing is my subject. I’m 78, teach t’ai chi, and am in good health other than these problems, which are debilitating because they limit my ability to exercise. After over a year of acupuncture, and exhausting medical testing abilities, I’m tracking down the LBAM spray as a cause of my problems. Your article confirmed my beliefs. Do you have solutions?
Welcome Diane,
I am terribly sorry to hear of the illness you have been suffering since the 2007 LBAM spray. I think one of the most egregious things about what happened is that Santa Cruz is a place known for a people who make efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle, like yourself. What I know is this – after the illegal spraying of these chemicals over Central California, the EPA banned two of them. See:

Unfortunately, I am deeply sorry not to be able to offer you any solutions to harms that were caused by the spray. I’m a writer – not a medical expert. But as you have found, even medical experts are not typically able to do much about the possible effects of pesticide exposure. Like most pesticides, there is not sufficient data as to the long term effects of exposure to the LBAM spray chemicals and I don’t know where you should turn next for advice. You sound like a very educated person in regards to alternative medicine. Likely the only thing to do is to keep trying different non-western doctors to see if anyone can help you. I know there were several in your area who were very active in the anti-spray campaign. Perhaps this could be your criteria for finding one? If they were highly visible during the disaster, they might have ended up with a lot of patients suffering effects of the spray and therefor might have the most data about illnesses stemming from it. Does this sound like a good suggestion?
I can relate to your frustration and fear with this. My very healthy husband now suffers from pleurisy on and off after being exposed to pesticides/herbicides sprayed in a vineyard. It’s painful and awful and, apparently, there’s nothing we can do about it. I wish you better luck finding something to help your breathing and lower your blood pressure, Diane. Please know, I’ve said a prayer for you and am sincerely wishing you some sort of new knowledge and comfort in 2012 to help with your ailments. Please, come again.
